Genetics Centenary Fund

The Department of Genetics has enjoyed a long tradition of educating the best and brightest students from around the world, regardless of their background. Training the next generation of high-calibre scientists is a key aspect of the Department’s programme, and enables students and junior researchers to learn from the foremost researchers in their field, accelerating both immediate learning and future career progression.

With funding from external sources variable and often limited, the Department has created the Genetics Centenary Fund, to enable us to offer financial support to junior researchers, and ensure that we continue to attract the very best talent from the UK and abroad. Ideally we would like to support junior researchers from undergraduate level to that of junior group leader, but our highest priority is to support postgraduate research students. For example, each year we have a number of applicants who are strong enough to obtain competitive partial scholarships, but it is not always possible to raise the balance required for them to come here.

Donations of all sizes can make a difference. By pooling the contributions to the Genetics Centenary Fund, allocations will be made by the Head of Department to support graduate students on a full or partial basis. A full three-year PhD studentship, at the overseas student rate, costs about £108,000 (based on a lump-sum gift made in 2012), but smaller donations, or accumulated donations, can fund partial scholarships. The Department would also be pleased to discuss naming opportunities in recognition of a major gift.

For further information, please contact Dr. Cahir O’Kane, Head of the Department of Genetics, email: head@gen.cam.ac.uk, tel: 01223 333998.
