Access to the Department of Genetics main building

The Genetics Building is of an Edwardian design that was intended to impress; easy access was not a consideration. In 2009, however, the main entrance was renovated and the accessibility of the building improved. The flight of steps approaching the front door now has a handrail, and there is a wheelchair lift to provide access to the reception area for people with limited mobility. Please see the image of the new entrance configuration on the right. A push button can be used to open the entrance doors. Once inside the building most areas can be accessed by the internal lift. However, people with mobility problems who wish to visit the Department are advised to always contact us in advance.

Physically disabled visitors to the Department of Genetics may need to take the following into account before arrival:

• It is difficult to obtain a parking space anywhere on the Downing site. If we are given sufficient notice, however, we will be able to reserve a space nearby
• Entrance is only via steps or wheelchair lift
• The internal lift has a wide entrance and will provide good access to most areas of the building. However, some staff offices, FlyBase, and the Bateson meeting room are at the top of a winding flight of stairs, and so have restricted access
• Most corridors have several sets of fire doors to be opened in order to reach labs or offices

The building complies with most of the requirements of the DDA and its supporting legislation. In most cases, any problems caused by deficits in the Department can be surmounted by modifying existing equipment, or making adjustments to the premises.

Teaching rooms in the Department are fitted with hearing induction loops. A portable induction loop is available for use in other areas, and can be picked up from Reception.

We are aware that not all disabilities are obvious and different people require different amounts of help. Please do ask us for help or information, and if possible say why you need a specific service.

Advance warning of a visit is strongly recommended. Please be reassured you are very welcome to visit the Department and we will do our best to ensure that your requests for assistance are dealt with swiftly.
