Department of Genetics

How to apply for Postgraduate study in the Department of Genetics

Before you apply for a Postgraduate course in this Department, it is very important that you read the information given on the Graduate School of Life Sciences website [see links on the right] and on the University of Cambridge website [links also on the right]. Since comprehensive information is mostly provided by these two websites, we have not repeated it on ours, but there are some links to useful local web pages on the left.

We have now compiled a Quick Guide to applying which you can download

Most Postgraduate students in the Department of Genetics are taking a three-year PhD, a few are taking a one-year MPhil, and one or two are taking a Certificate of Post Graduate Education. Applications for all three are made at the same time and in the same way.

As of October 2009, all graduate applications made to departments in the School of Biological Sciences should be submitted on-line. The Graduate School of Life Sciences website provides comprehensive information, including full application instructions and help. The application form itself can also be found there.

Supplementary information about applying for a Postgraduate coures at Cambridge can be found on the Board of Graduate Studies website. The Graduate Admissions e-mail is: graduate.admissions@admin.cam.ac.uk

Our entrance requirements comply with the University of Cambridge requirements. Basically you should have, or should attain at the end of your Undergraduate course, a 2.1 degree. You should also be able to demonstrate that you are competent in the English language.

Before applying to the Department of Genetics you should check the PhD projects offered and the research being undertaken in the various labs [see the Lab listing] to ensure we can accommodate your proposed project. Contact the relevant Group Leader if necessary to discuss this.

There is no formal deadline for applications, but they are evaluated in December, and interviews are held in January. Obviously, the earlier applications are submitted, the better. Some funding bodies, such as the Cambridge Trusts, have application deadlines as early as October.
