Polo-like kinases (Plks) reagulte different stages of cell cycle: mitotic entry, spindle assembly, chromosome segregation and cytokinesis. These multiple cell cycle functions make it is difficult to understand Plks roles at different stages using conventional knockdown or depletion techniques. Specific and sensitive inhibitors provide good tools to investigate Plks function during mitotic progression. In collaboration with Dr Shudong Wang's group at the University of Nottingham we aim to characterize new Plks inhibitor(s).

The centrosome is the major microtubule organizing centre in animal cells and its function and maturation is closely regulated by Plks. With the help of the BI 2536 compound and other biochemical methods, I am studying Plk-regulated phospho-protein profiles during cell cycle progression. I am interested in Polo substrate(s) at the centrosome, especially those controlling microtubule organization and dynamics.
