Research interests
My current research interests involve the study of recombination and repair of DNA using the bacterium E.coli as a model system.
The ability of cells to use genetic recombination to promote diversity and to act as a repair function is essential. The appropriate proteins are loaded on to the DNA molecules by proteins that recognize the primary substrate or lesion. Eventually these proteins have to be removed in an ordered manner to ensure that there is no futile cycling of reactants. This involves the recX and din I proteins in Escherichia coli. The initiation and termination of the SOS response need further study.
