NST 1B Ecology

This course is taught jointly by the Departments of Genetics, Plant Sciences and Zoology. It aims to acquaint students with key ecological concepts and approaches and to the major ecosystems and to introduce habitats, organisms, approaches and the methodology of ecological research on the field course and through project work. The course examines:

  • The global marine ecosystem, freshwater ecosystems and the ecology of change in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems
  • Foraging behaviour and Predator-Prey interactions
  • The ecology of social behaviour and the diversity of breeding systems
  • Ecological genetics: spread of genes through populations and role of natural selection
  • Ecological dynamics: populations, communities and ecosystems
  • Biodiversity
  • Human impact on the environment
