Genetics Library - Holdings

As books are now rarely used to teach genetics, we cannot claim to hold a 'collection' of recent books on the subject. A few recently-published key general undergraduate text-books are strictly for use in the Library only. We do, however, have a number of older books related to the subject that may be of interest to historians of science.

Most of our books are represented on the online catalogue, but some of the older volumes are not. Search the catalogue using iDiscover. Online catalogue entries do not indicate if a book is on loan. Please contact us if you wish to check whether we have a book not listed on the catalogue. Any book that is not designated 'Reserve' may be borrowed [including by non-members of the Department].

Most serial publications in the subject area of genetics are available online to all members of the University. The Genetics Library holds a few back-runs, including some rare titles, such as the newsletters of specialist groups. Our journals are represented on the online catalogue, searched via iDiscover, but the brief entries are sometimes difficult to interpret. Please contact us for information.

The Library holds thousands of reprints and pamphlets by geneticists, dating from the 1900s to the 1970s. The collection is based on material amassed by R.A. Fisher and R.C. Punnett when they worked in the Department. Some of the material has been annotated, or even corrected, and occasionally a previously unknown piece of research surfaces. This under-used and largely unknown collection is likely to be of interest to historians of science. Unfortunately it is not represented on any online catalogue, but there is a large card catalogue. The Genetics Library is also currently holding the Drosophila Reprint Collection, maintained by FlyBase. There is no publicly-accessible catalogue or this, but we do have a database.

Please contact us if you think we might have an item in our reprints collections, as they are currently off-site in a store.

Department Archives

Unfortunately the Genetics Library does not have an archive of the past activities of the Department. Some material is held in the University Library, and this almost certainly represents anything still in existence. Some of this can be identified on Janus, the University Archives catalogue, but some is indexed separately. Please contact the University Archives regarding scope of, and access to, items located there.
