Department of Genetics

The Department of Genetics is delighted to report that Amie Baker, Chief Building and Facilities Manager, was announced as a winner of the 'Innovating and Improving' award at the Professional Services Recognition ceremony on Monday 11 December 2023.

The award recognised Amie's hard work in developing new methods to deal with delicate fly tubes and saving the department thousands of liters of water, energy and staff hours.

Her innovation has not only resulted in a safer working environment for the facilities staff, with a reduction in the amount of broken glass, but has meant an 80% reduction in the Department's water usage, as well as a significant reduction in energy use. The financial savings mean more money can be directed to support research activities.

Furthermore, the Department is now beginning to offer fly food in reusable glass to other institutions in the University, which will make a substantial reduction in the amount of un-recyclable plastic going to landfill.
