Dr Carol Edwards
- Assistant Research Professor
About
Biography
Carol has a BSc in Biology from the University of Manchester. After graduating, she joined the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, where she worked on the Human Genome Project. She then moved to the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge where she gained her PhD studying the evolution of genomic imprinting. She is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Genetics currently acting as the Deputy PI for the Ferguson-Smith research group.
Research Interests
Genomic imprinting is an epigenetically regulated process established early in embryonic development that results in parent-of-origin-specific gene expression. Our lab uses imprinting as a model to investigate the relationship between epigenetic states and genome function. Our research focuses on the interplay between long non-coding RNAs, transcriptional regulatory elements, chromatin architecture, and epigenetic mechanisms in modulating gene expression. Using mouse models and molecular genetics, we aim to define the cascade of events required to establish and maintain imprinting throughout development and beyond.
