Centernary celebrations were hosted at the John Innes Conference Centre on Tuesday 25 June 2019.

Posters designed for our Saunders Lecture 2018 were displayed during the celebrations (pictured above).  The posters were very much appreciated and attendees commented on how much they had learnt through these.

The Director of the John Innes Centre opened the proceedings, followed by an excellent introduction by Lawrence Hurst, the current President of the Genetics Society.

Lawrence introduced William Bateson, Edith Saunders and Nobel Laureate, Sir Paul Nurse.  Paul Nurse opened two blue plaques; one for Saunders and another for Bateson.  Sir Paul Nurse was awarded the centenary medal, which is given once in every 100 years!  Which was followed by an excellent acceptance speech.

Professor Anne Ferguson-Smith, Head of Department, will become President of the Genetics Society in 2021.  Anne will begin shadowing from 2020.

Dr Sudhakaran Prabakaran, Group Leader, is currently the Genetics Society Shadow Treasurer until May 2020, when he will take over as active Honorary Secretary.
