Department of Genetics

Join us at the Department of Genetics to take part in fun activities to understand heredity, and discover how fruit flies are used to study genes.

We will be hosting 4 activities, appropriate for all ages :

1. Zebrafish embryogenesis. Participants will learn about zebrafish development and look at a number of embryonic stages under the microscope.
2. Fruit fly genetics. Participants will observe living fruit flies under the microscope and on a screen, familiarizing themselves with a number of different fly stocks.
3. Human mendelian traits. Participants will explore their own genetic make-up by taking part in a taste test, as well as learn about other human genetic traits.
4. Photographic matching game. Participants will be tasked to match descriptions to a wide range of beautiful scientific photographs.
